This recipe is simple to make and tastes amazing, plus it’s kid tested and approved! This homemade version is perfect for Harry Potter movie marathons, Harry Potter-themed birthday parties, book clubs, or a sweet afternoon treat.

WHAT IS BUTTERBEER?

The term butterbeer is instantly recognizable to Harry Potter fans- despite the drink being centuries old. It dates back to the 1500s, and is historically made with beer, sugar, eggs, cloves, and nutmeg. The famous Harry Potter series popularized the drink using a similar flavor profile.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS RECIPE

  • Cream Soda: Any brand of cream soda will do, but we love Boylan’s!
  • Butterscotch Syrup: Butterscotch syrup is an easy way to give the drink its signature Butterbeer flavor.
  • Whipped Cream: Our homemade whipped cream comes together in less than five minutes using heavy cream and powdered sugar. We sweeten ours with English toffee extract. You could use store-bought whipped cream, but with a flavor like this, I don’t know why you would want to.

SUBSTITUTIONS AND VARIATIONS

  • Replace the cream soda with club soda.
  • Add alcohol-free rum extract. I love how it tastes, but it didn’t pass the kid test during recipe development.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is butterbeer alcoholic?

Despite its name and history, butterbeer most often refers to a creamy butterscotch mocktail. This sweet and creamy beverage is beautiful to look at and perfect for adults and children alike.

What does Harry Potter butterbeer taste like?

It “snare the senses.”
One sip of this flavorful whipped cream-topped soft drink with heavy notes of toffee and caramel will leave you wanting more. Admittedly, the drink you buy at Universal Studios has more butterscotch flavor than ours, but we try to keep it simple over here.

Can I make frozen butterbeer?

You sure can, but you will need a few more ingredients! Blend two scoops of vanilla ice cream, one cup of ice, cream soda, butter extract, and toffee extract in a blender. Then, top the chilled beverage with homemade whipped cream and finish with caramel syrup.

As a die-hard Harry Potter fan, I was so excited to try this butterbeer recipe, and it did not disappoint! The toffee and butter extract give the cream soda a deliciously rich and sweet flavor, and the whipped cream is the perfect finishing touch. This recipe truly made me feel like I was in Hogsmeade enjoying a drink at The Three Broomsticks. Highly recommend giving it a try!
