WHAT IS BUTTERBEER?
The term butterbeer is instantly recognizable to Harry Potter fans- despite the drink being centuries old. It dates back to the 1500s, and is historically made with beer, sugar, eggs, cloves, and nutmeg. The famous Harry Potter series popularized the drink using a similar flavor profile.
WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS RECIPE
- Cream Soda: Any brand of cream soda will do, but we love Boylan’s!
- Butterscotch Syrup: Butterscotch syrup is an easy way to give the drink its signature Butterbeer flavor.
- Whipped Cream: Our homemade whipped cream comes together in less than five minutes using heavy cream and powdered sugar. We sweeten ours with English toffee extract. You could use store-bought whipped cream, but with a flavor like this, I don’t know why you would want to.
SUBSTITUTIONS AND VARIATIONS
- Replace the cream soda with club soda.
- Add alcohol-free rum extract. I love how it tastes, but it didn’t pass the kid test during recipe development.
