Harry Potter Butterbeer Recipe

Harry Potter Butterbeer RecipeAttention, calling all Harry Potter fans! Our easy butterbeer recipe is a take on the fictional beverage served at The Three Broomsticks in the book. We flavor cream soda with toffee and butter extract and top it off with extra sweet homemade whipped cream. This wizarding drink can be served hot or cold and pairs well with appetizers like beef pasties. Similar to the books, this butterbeer copycat recipe will transport you straight to Hogsmeade.

This recipe is simple to make and tastes amazing, plus it’s kid tested and approved! This homemade version is perfect for Harry Potter movie marathons, Harry Potter-themed birthday parties, book clubs, or a sweet afternoon treat.

WHAT IS BUTTERBEER?

The term butterbeer is instantly recognizable to Harry Potter fans- despite the drink being centuries old. It dates back to the 1500s, and is historically made with beer, sugar, eggs, cloves, and nutmeg. The famous Harry Potter series popularized the drink using a similar flavor profile.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS RECIPE

A labeled image of the ingredients for our butterbeer recipe.
  • Cream Soda: Any brand will do, but we love Boylan’s! They also have diet cream soda if that’s your thing.
  • Extract: Toffee and butter extract flavor the drink, and caramel extract imparts sweetness to the homemade whipped cream.
  • Whipped Cream: Our homemade whipped cream comes together in less than five minutes using heavy cream and powdered sugar. We sweeten ours with a drop of caramel extract. You could use store-bought whipped cream, but I don’t know why you would want to.

SUBSTITUTIONS AND VARIATIONS

  • Replace the cream soda with club soda.
  • Add alcohol-free rum extract to the drink. I love how it tastes, but it didn’t pass the kid test during the development phase.

  • Blend the ingredients for the whipping cream with a hand-mixer until it forms peaks; the entire process takes about 2-3 minutes. You can make it by hand using a whisk, but it will increase the preparation time.
  • If you prefer warm butterbeer, consider adding one teaspoon of real butter in place of the butter extract.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is butterbeer alcoholic?

Despite its name and history, butterbeer most often refers to a creamy butterscotch mocktail. This sweet and creamy beverage is beautiful to look at and perfect for adults and children alike.

What does Harry Potter butterbeer taste like?

It “snare the senses.”
One sip of this flavorful whipped cream-topped soft drink with heavy notes of toffee and caramel will leave you wanting more. Admittedly, the drink you buy at Universal Studios has more butterscotch flavor than ours, but we try to keep it simple over here.

Can I make frozen butterbeer?

You sure can, but you will need a few more ingredients! Blend two scoops of vanilla ice cream, one cup of ice, cream soda, butter extract, and toffee extract in a blender. Then, top the chilled beverage with homemade whipped cream and finish with caramel syrup.
