Fresh mangos are delicious but can be tricky to handle if you are unsure how to prepare them. Follow this super-easy technique for how to cut a mango.
How to Select a Ripe Mango
Ripe, not overly ripe, mangos work best for salsa recipes, and here’s how to find them!
- Look: Color is more of an indicator of the type of mango and has less to do with ripeness. Instead, look for mangos with a rounded shape.
- Touch: The outside of the mango should feel soft but not mushy.
- Smell: A ripe mango will smell fruit near the stem.
If you don’t have access to ripe mangos, leave unripened mangos on the countertop at room temperature for a few days.

Step 1: Stabilize the mango by using a paring knife to cut the end off of the mango. Because mangos have an oblong pit, hold it upright and use the paring knife to cut alongside the pit. Turn and repeat on the other side.
Step 2: Score each side of the mango in a grid pattern.
Step 3:
Method 1: Push on the peel to expose the mango cubes, and run the paring knife along the peel to remove the cubes.
Method 2: Scoop the mango cubes out with a spoon.
Step 4: Remove the mango from either side of the pit.
