Key Ingredients

  • Crust: Use a prepared pizza crust or a four-pack of mini garlic naan to make the festive Halloween pizza or mini pizzas.
  • Sauce: Spread pizza arrabbiata sauce or homemade sugo al pomodoro onto the crust.
  • Toppings: Finish the pizza with shredded mozzarella cheese, dried oregano, garlic powder, and pepperoni slices.
  • Skull Mushrooms: Use small button mushrooms for the best results–the fresher, the better!

More Toppings for Pizza

If you want to mix up the toppings, I suggest adding black olives, sliced jalapeños, or green bell peppers. Crispy bacon bits and Italian sausage are hearty options, or brighten the pizza with spinach leaves, arugula, or a dollop of pistachio pesto.

Expert Tips

  • Wash the mushrooms. Mushrooms hold a lot of moisture, so it’s best to brush any dirt off with a paper towel to wipe them clean. If you need to wash them with water, pat them dry to remove excess moisture.
  • Rotate the Pizza. Move the sheet pan or pizza stone halfway through if you are worried about your oven having hot spots.

How to Prepare the Skull Mushrooms for the Pizza

  1. Rub the mushrooms gently with a paper towel to remove dirt. Then, cut the button mushrooms in half.
  2. Use a paring knife to create a few small slits for the mouth in the base of the mushroom called the stipe.
  3. Create two tiny holes or slits at the bottom of the mushroom cap for the nostrils.
  4. Use a straw to puncture the cap to make the eyes for the skull.

Serving Suggestions

When serving skull mushroom pizza, stick with crowd favorites like garlic bread, mozzarella sticks, Caesar salad, or a fresh burrata Caprese.

Crispy chicken wings are always a hit when feeding a crowd. Try garlic butter chicken wings, hot honey lemon pepper wings, or air fryer garlic parmesan wings.

If you prefer to keep it eerie, why not make breadsticks that look like witches’ fingers, a monster-shaped vegetable crudite platter with a ghoulish green dip like guacamole or green chili aioli?

What To Do With Leftovers

  • Refrigerate: Line an airtight container with paper towels and add the leftover pizza slices. If you have multiple slices, stack them with a layer of parchment paper in between to prevent sticking. They will keep for 3-4 days.
  • Freeze: Let the pizza cool and transfer it to a freezer-safe container or bag. The skull mushroom pizza will freeze for up to 2-3 months.
  • Thaw: Defrost the leftovers in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Reheat: Use an oven or skillet to keep the crust crispy. Avoid using the microwave if you can—it can make the pizza chewy.
