Generously coat the beef brisket with salt & pepper.

Warm oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat & sear the beef.

Stir in water, Better than Bouillon, peppercorns, ginger, & bay leaves; cook for 1 hour.

Warm oil in a saute pan & cook the onions Add the garlic & ginger.

Stir in the beef & simmer. Add 1 cup of reserved broth, soy sauce, sugar, & star anise. Cook for 20 minutes on low-medium heat.
