Yes, you can make homemade pita chips in the air fryer! And the air fryer gives the homemade chips a delicious crunch without deep frying. Homemade air-fried chips taste better than the store-bought ones, and you can season them to your liking.

  • Pita Bread: Cut four pita chips into triangles to make perfectly crispy air-fried pita chips.
  • Cooking Spray: Coat the pita bread with olive oil cooking spray to ensure the chips become crispy and golden brown. You can also use avocado oil.
  • Kosher Salt: No matter how you season the chips include kosher salt to get the right flavor.
  • Homemade Za’atar: Combine sumac, dried thyme, oregano, and a pinch of ground nutmeg for a quick za’atar, or purchase the spice blend in the store.

All you need to make air fryer pita chips is a sharp knife and an air fryer. I used an Instant Pot Vortex Air Fryer with a large basket.

How to Make Air Fryer Pita Chips

Step 1: Combine the ingredients for homemade za’atar in a small bowl and set it aside (skip this step if using store-bought za’atar).

Step 2: Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (176°C). Carefully cut the pita bread into small triangles.

Step 3: Then, split the pita bread into two.

Step 4: Coat them with cooking spray and sprinkle kosher salt over the top.

Step 5: Arrange the chips into the air fryer basket in a single layer and cook for 3 minutes.

Step 6: Shake the basket and sprinkle them with za’atar. Continue cooking for 2-4 minutes or until the pita chips are golden brown and crispy.

Expert Tips

  • After you cut the pita bread into equal triangles, separate the top and bottom layers so they crisp evenly.
  • Arrange the pitas into the air fryer basket in a single layer. Work in batches for even cooking, and don’t overcrowd the basket.
  • Shake the basket halfway through to help the pita chips crisp up uniformly.
  • Cooking the pita chips for 5-7 minutes should work for most air fryer models, but keep an eye on them during the last few minutes to avoid overcooking.
