Tips for Making the Best Overnight Oats Recipes

  • Store overnight oats in a jar with room to spare since the oatmeal expands as it rehydrates, and so will any mix-ins you add.
  • I find a 1:1 ratio of one part old-fashioned oats and one part milk the best unless you add chia seeds or flaxseeds. Use less liquid if you want thicker oatmeal and more if you like it runny.
  • Despite the name overnight oats, they only need to soak for 2-3 hours before you can enjoy them. However, the longer you soak the oats, the softer they will become.
  • Give the mixture a good stir before adding toppings and digging in. If the oats seem dry after sitting in the fridge, add another splash of milk.
  • Overnight oats are typically consumed cold, but if you prefer a warm bowl of oatmeal, you can heat the prepared oats in the microwave.

Serving Suggestions

The best overnight oat recipes have a few things in common – oats (of course) and mix-ins to take them to the next level. Here are a few of my favorites!

  • Chocolate Chips, Cocoa Nibs, Cocoa Powder
  • Chocolate or Vanilla Protein Powder
  • Walnuts, Pecans, Almonds
  • Agave, Maple Syrup, Monk Fruit, Fig Jam
  • Greek Yogurt, Cottage Cheese
  • Almond Butter, Sunflower Seed Butter, Peanut Butter, Nutella, Cookie Butter

How Long do Overnight Oats Last?

  • Refrigerate – Store overnight oat recipes in an airtight container for 3-4 days. If the oats seem dry after sitting in the fridge, add another splash of almond milk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best liquid for overnight oats?

It depends on what you like. Milk is my preferred liquid to make overnight oat recipes. Use dairy, oat, almond, coconut, or soy milk. You can also use water, orange juice, apple juice, and yogurt.

What is the ratio of oats to liquid for these Overnight Oat Recipes?

People often enjoy their oats in one of two ways. Some want them to be thin and wet, whereas others eat theirs as a thick paste. I prefer mine thin, but I try to keep a good balance with these overnight oat recipes, and I usually shoot for a 1:1 ratio of oats to liquid unless I include chia, flax, or basil seeds. For those recipes, I use a 1:2 ratio.
If my recipe is too thin, I recommend adding a tablespoon of Greek yogurt to thicken the oats and increase the protein.

Do you eat overnight oats warm or cold?

Serve overnight oats chilled straight from the fridge for a convenient, no-cook breakfast that doesn’t need to be heated. However, if you crave something warm, microwave the oats for 30 seconds to a minute before adding the toppings.
